If your circadian clock runs faster than 24 hours, you are likely a morning person, which is often referred to as a \u201clark.\u201d If it runs slower, you are a night person, or an \u201cowl.\u201d You\u2019ve probably heard the phrase \u201cnight owl\u201d associated with someone who tends to stay up until the wee hours of the morning. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The predisposition to being an \u201cowl\u201d or a \u201clark\u201d affects when an individual feels the most productive and alert. While mostly an interesting fact, knowing your predisposition can help you plan your day and the sleep\/wake time that works best for you. <\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetics and Sleep Apnea<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genes may play a part in your risk factor for developing a sleep disorder, as well. According to a study by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3153991\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Biotechnology Information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the gene APOE e4 may predispose some people to having sleep apnea. The link between the gene and the condition is complex, however, because there are likely multiple genes involved. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genes could affect a person\u2019s risk factor for sleep apnea by determining characteristics like the width of a person\u2019s airway or the control of the muscles surrounding the throat. Of course, other conditions can be influenced by genes that are also associated with sleep apnea, like obesity and hypertension. APOE e4 has been associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepdunwoody.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/22\/alzheimers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any disease, knowing your family\u2019s genetic makeup and predisposition to certain disorders is important to monitor your own health.
