Studies have shown that headaches and sleep have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24132786\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interdependent relationship<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headaches are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sleep.org\/articles\/waking-up-with-headache\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to eight times more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in those with sleep disorders.<\/span>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this sounds familiar to you, you might be interested to learn more about the connection between headaches and sleep, a few disorders that display these symptoms and solutions for both painful headaches and poor rest.<\/span>\n<h2>Types of Headaches<\/h2>\n<h3>Migraines<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated that more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/migraine.com\/migraine-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. suffer from migraines. Lasting anywhere between two and 72 hours and causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and a sensitivity to light, sound, or smell, migraines are severe and debilitating for the sufferer.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, both a lack of sleep <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> excessive sleep can trigger migraines. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50% of migraines occur between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 80% of regular migraine sufferers wake up still feeling tired. Chronically waking up with a migraine could be the sign of a sleep disorder, such as insomnia or sleep apnea. Migraines sufferers are also more likely to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanheadachesociety.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depressed or anxious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making existing sleep issues worse. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, on the other side of the coin, sleep can also help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrainetrust.org\/living-with-migraine\/coping-managing\/sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alleviate or even terminate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a migraine attack.<\/span>\n<h3>Cluster Headaches<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another type of severe headache is a cluster headache, which occurs in patterns, or clusters, and is usually limited to one side of the head. Attacks typically manifest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrainetrust.org\/living-with-migraine\/coping-managing\/sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which some experts believe may be due to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhni.com\/headache-pain-faq\/cluster-headaches\/cluster-headache-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the brain switching from REM sleep to a lighter stage of sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, possibly indicating a connection between a person\u2019s circadian rhythm (the sleep\/wake cycle) and headaches. A sleep analysis can help determine if certain sleep habits are playing a role in the onset of cluster headaches.<\/span>\n<h3>Exploding Head Syndrome<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another headache phenomenon that has been associated with sleep issues is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepeducation.org\/sleep-disorders-by-category\/parasomnias\/exploding-head-syndrome\/overview-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploding head syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This type of headache is a rare condition in which a person experiences unreal noises that are loud and short when falling asleep and waking up, such as the sound of a bomb exploding or other loud bang. Sufferers should consult a doctor for treatment, which may include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepassociation.org\/sleep-disorders\/more-sleep-disorders\/exploding-head-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication or stress reduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<h2>Sleep Disorders &amp; Headaches<\/h2>\n<h3>Bruxism<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One sleep disorder particularly linked with headaches is bruxism, a condition in which a person unconsciously clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth during sleep. It\u2019s estimated that about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sleepdisorders.sleepfoundation.org\/chapter-7-sleep-related-movement-disorders\/sleep-related-bruxism\/p\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the disorder, often brought on by stress. It\u2019s common for sufferers of bruxism to wake up with a morning headache.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solutions for bruxism include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mproving sleep habits, such as falling asleep and waking up at the same time each day, creating a consistent wind-down routine, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepdunwoody.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/23\/benefits-reading-bed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoiding electronics that emit blue light before bed<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding ways to de-stress throughout the day, such as exercise, journaling thoughts or meditation<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An oral appliance, which will stop grinding and relieve pressure on facial muscles and the jaw joint<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember, however, that the best solution for bruxism will vary depending on the type and intensity of bruxism as well as the individual patient.<\/span>\n<h3>Insomnia<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia and headaches also seem to be innately linked &#8212; and in fact, it is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanheadachesociety.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common complaint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those that suffer from frequent headaches. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Headache Society, patients with chronic migraines (headaches that occur 15 or more days per month) report having almost twice the rates of insomnia as those with less frequent headaches.<\/span>\n<h3>Sleep Apnea<\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common indicator of sleep apnea is waking up with a headache. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepreviewmag.com\/2017\/04\/headaches-related-sleep-apnea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those who regularly wake up in the morning with a headache may have sleep apnea.
