That means that there is a large percentage of unproductive people out there! For most, coffee takes<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caffeineinformer.com\/caffeine-metabolism\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an average of 4-6 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be completely cleared from the body. Any caffeine consumed after 12 p.m. can impact your rest that night.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Productivity &amp; Sleep Deprivation<\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the cause, there\u2019s no question that sleep deprivation has a significant negative impact on work productivity. A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR1791.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by RAND Corporation uncovered that the U.S. experiences the highest economic loss due to insufficient sleep compared to other countries &#8212; up to $411 billion a year and the equivalent of about 1.23 million workdays.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of sleep affects our mental functions and ability to perform on the job in many ways:<\/span>\r\n<h3><strong>Attention and Working Memory<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2656292\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention and working memory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are linked to the functioning of the frontal lobes in the brain, which are very vulnerable to sleep deprivation. One<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304394018302854\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of two groups &#8212; a sleep-deprived group and a group that was well-rested &#8212; found that selective attention was much harder for those that were sleep-deprived.<\/span>\r\n<h3><strong>Emotions<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/how-sleep-deprivation-affects-work-and-performance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Hult International Business School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 84% of those surveyed reported that they felt more irritable as a result of poor sleep, which can affect decision-making on the job and interpersonal interactions.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcresearch.berkeley.edu\/news\/sleep-deprived-brain-can-mistake-friends-foes\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A different study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 18 healthy, young adults found that, when shown a series of facial expressions ranging from friendly to threatening, individuals who had been awake for 24 hours perceived more faces to be threatening. The inability to recognize and react to the emotional state of others seems to be a consequence of poor sleep that can affect relationships.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these factors play together when you\u2019re sleep deprived to make you less than the best version of yourself on the job.
