Does this mean you should avoid alcohol altogether? Today, we dive deeper into the connection between alcohol and sleep to discover if a harmonious relationship between the two is possible.<\/span>\n\n<!--more-->\n<h2><b>How Does Alcohol Affect Sleep?<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that, as a depressant, alcohol does help you fall asleep faster, but those effects quickly wear away after just a few hours as your body tries to eliminate the alcohol from your system.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sleep-topics\/how-alcohol-affects-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Sleep Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one explanation for poor sleep after drinking is that the production of adenosine (a chemical in the brain that acts as a sleep-inducer) increases while drinking, allowing you to go to sleep quickly &#8212; however, this chemical quickly subsides, making you more likely to wake up throughout the night. Drinking before bed is also linked with more slow-wave sleep patterns called delta activity, but alpha activity, which indicates wakefulness with eyes closed and often precedes sleep, is turned on at the same time. Experiencing these two brain wave activities at the same time is thought to inhibit quality rest. Additionally, alcohol inhibits REM sleep, which is often considered the most mentally restorative phase of sleep.<\/span>\n<h2><b>Alcohol &amp; Sleep by the Numbers<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish researchers found in a 2018 study that alcohol had significant effects on sleep quality, regardless of whether consumption was light, moderate, or heavy. After analyzing the sleep\/alcohol habits of 4,098 adults between the ages of 18-65, they found that:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low alcohol intake reduced sleep quality by 9.3%<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate alcohol intake (defined as two drinks per day for men and one for women) reduced sleep quality by 24%<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy alcohol intake reduced sleep quality by nearly 40%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also showed that alcohol affected men, women, and both active and sedentary individuals similarly. Perhaps surprisingly, it found that alcohol affected the sleep of younger people more than it did older adults.<\/span>\n<h2><b>How to Drink &amp; Sleep Responsibly<\/b><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So with all of this information, does that mean you should give up drinking for good to preserve quality sleep? Nope! You can still enjoy a drink or two, but there are a couple of tips you should follow to ensure it\u2019s not impairing your sleep:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow at minimum three hours between your last drink and the time you go to bed.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink water along with alcohol to help flush the alcohol out. <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink alcohol as you\u2019re eating a meal &#8212; since you\u2019re likely eating a few hours before bed, this is a good way to keep drinking in check.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid alcohol if you\u2019re taking sleeping pills\u2014both are depressants, and in combination, they can make it very hard for a person to breathe while sleeping, so much so that it actually becomes dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find that you persistently snore whether you\u2019ve been drinking or not, it could be due to a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea. When a person is diagnosed with sleep apnea, it means that they have short and frequent breathing cessations during the night. These cessations force the body to partially rouse itself over and over again in order to restore proper breathing, preventing sufferers from getting the deep, restful sleep they need. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and it occurs when the tissues in the mouth and throat relax and block the airway during sleep.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic daytime exhaustion<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loud, persistent snoring<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental fog\u2014problems focusing or remembering things<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression\/mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble with weight gain\/losing weight<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waking up gasping for air or feeling out of breath<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent morning headaches &amp; sore throats<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can make existing obstructive<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepdunwoody.com\/what-is-sleep-apnea.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and snoring worse &#8212; and higher levels of alcohol consumption can even<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5840512\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase a person\u2019s risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sleep apnea &#8212; so those with sleep apnea should pay special attention to their drinking habits before bedtime to make sure they\u2019re setting themselves up for the best sleep possible. Of course, good drinking and sleeping habits alone won\u2019t be successful in treating sleep apnea symptoms as the disorder is a serious medical condition that requires proper treatment.
